Most of the women nowadays use various kinds of beauty products every day. However, you probably do not know that these products besides being too expensive contain carcinogenic chemicals as well. According to a certain study, 99% of the breast cancer tissues contain parabens, chemicals which are linked to cancer.

As reported by the researchers, most common chemicals are propylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben. They are used as preservatives in hair-care products (conditioners, gels and shampoos), moisturizers (both body and face), makeup and shaving gels and creams.

Researchers have said that only few brands of the deodorants and antiperspirants do not contain parabens, but the bad news is that they contain aluminum which is linked to both breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Parabens are said to contain ″estrogen-like″ properties and it has been proven that the excessive amount of estrogen leads to breast cancer development.

Medical experts claim that when we are being exposed to ″estrogen-like″ chemicals, there is ″estrogen dominance″ in our bodies which results in extra fat buildup in the belly area, reduced muscle mass and breast growth in men, known as gynecomastia. These are only few of the issues that are caused due to too much estrogen.

Many studies link these chemicals to breast cancer and they are found in the breast cancer tissues located in the area closest to the underarm, where most cancerous tumors are usually detected. Note that this is the area where you apply antiperspirants and deodorants.

How to protect yourself?

These beauty products have become a major part of our lives and they do not only make us feel great about ourselves, but they are also used in personal hygiene.

You probably wonder what to do since these products may harm you or your family members. You should know that Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act do not authorize the Food and Drug Association to approve cosmetic ingredients, except for some color additives in the hair dyes.

However, the bad thing is that cosmetic manufacturers can add literally anything they want to their products, except the ingredients which are already prohibited by regulation.

The Environmental Protection Agency in the US has stated that parabens are harmful both for our health and the environment. However, adding these chemicals to the beauty products is still not prohibited by regulation.

The EPA claims that according to some studies, parabens and some sunscreens manifest estrogenicity and various hormonal activities in vitro. Due to their high consumption volume and the high lipophilicity, parabens can enter and persist in our environment. Moreover, they can also bioaccumulate in the tissues of the living organisms.

This is alarming sign for the government agencies to make some changes of what they will allow the cosmetic companies to add to the beauty and cosmetic products. However, until then, the responsibility to find and use only safe products lies within us. In the text below you can find out some tips of how to protect yourself from the harmful chemicals.

1. Read labels

First of all, you should familiarize yourself with the names of the chemicals you should avoid:

• Butylparaben
• Methylparaben
• Propylparaben
• Ethylparaben
• Benzylparaben

If you see these ingredients listed on the products, make sure you look for another type of beauty product. Since it is known that parabens are harmful, many companies advertise their cosmetic or beauty products as ″paraben-free″, which makes the finding of safe products easier. Note that parabens are not the only compounds which are associated to cancer and estrogen dominance.

Another study has discovered a new class of cancerous agents such as some metals which are also added to both our food and to the beauty products. They mimic estrogen as well.

These metals are known as ″metalloestrogens″ and are linked to breast cancer too. Here is a list of the cancer-causing ″metalloestrogens″ you should avoid:

• Antimony
• Aluminum
• Arsenite
• Barium
• Cobalt
• Chromium
• Cadmium
• Copper
• Mercury
• Lead
• Nickel
• Vanadate
• Salenite
• Tin

According to the researchers, you should be extremely careful when buying cosmetic or beauty products, since these metals can be highly harmful even in minimal amounts – less than they are currently found in most of the consumer products.

You need to know that Aluminum salts are used as antiperspirants and they are believed to contribute to the breast cancer development in Western societies. Yet, so far no experimental or epidemiological data confirm this hypothesis.

It has been reported that in human mammary epithelial cells (MCF-10A), extended exposure to aluminum chloride – AlCl(3) in concentration of 10-300 µm, which is lower than the amounts found in the antiperspirants and in the human breast, causes loss of contact inhibition and the growth of the cells becomes anchorage-independent.

This has been reported in 2006 in the Journal of Applied Toxicology and it implies that if these metals are carcinogenic at 100.000 times lower concentration than the one found in the cosmetic and beauty products, imagine how high is the risk of developing cancer in our bodies.

2. Make your own cosmetic and beauty products

You can make your own cosmetic and beauty products, since it is cheaper, safer and easier than you might think. In this way you use only natural ingredients which are completely safe for you and your family. You can also find over hundred recipes for numerous homemade products online.

As you might know, the most dangerous products are definitely deodorants, so here is a simple recipe of how to make a natural and safe deodorant. Follow these instructions:

• Baking soda – 3 tablespoons
• Coconut oil – 3 tablespoons
• Organic cornstarch or arrowroot – 2 tablespoons
• Shea butter – 2 tablespoons
• Mason jar with lid
• Essential oils (choose those oils which can have some powerful effects)

Mix the coconut oil and the Shea butter in the mason jar. Microwave this mixture until it starts melting and make sure you do not put the metal lid. Next, add the arrowroot and baking soda and mix them well with a spoon. Finally, add the essential oils and store the mixture in the fridge.

3. Buy natural products

This can be very expensive but the alternative can be more costly. When you look for the items that you always use, make sure you buy only natural products or at least the products that are less harmful.
