We are sure that you know turmeric. It is the pungent, bright spice that is present in different Indian dishes with curry. However, Tony Avey, a food writer who wrote one article for PBS Food says that people use it as a medicine for more than 4,500 years.

He explains that in the tradition of Indian Ayurvedic (“science of life”) turmeric is respected because of its amazing anti-inflammatory properties and because of its ability to treat wounds, congestion, bruises and many other skin conditions, such as shingles and smallpox.

It is delicious in rice, eggs, smoothies and soups, but you can combine it with many household ingredients in order to prepare topical ointments and treatments and heal everything from cancer to acne.

1. Heal wounds and cuts

Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and it is a very powerful anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral agent. That is why this amazing spice can prevent bacterial infection in open wounds; it can relieve pain and inflammation and can help in the formation of new skin cells that can close the wounds.

If you want to use turmeric in order to heal cuts and wounds just apply turmeric powder on the wound. If you want to get additional benefits, mix linseed oil and turmeric or ginger paste and the pain will be reduced.

2. Acne treatment and facial cleanser

Prepare an organic facial cleanser by mixing 1/4 tsp. of turmeric powder, 1/4 teaspoon of neem oil (it is made from a tropical tree that grows in India and the Indian subcontinent) or you can substitute it for free-range organic milk and 1 to 3 drops of coconut oil or lavender oil.

This mask is amazing for preventing acne breakouts since neem oil or milk and turmeric have anti-fungal properties. You should let this paste on your face for half an hour. It is also good for healing acne scars.

3. Reduce inflammation

Curcumin is able to reduce swelling and inflammation. This is a special property and that is why in the past curcumin was used for treating inflammatory diseases – from Rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease; eye inflammation to gingivitis.

If you want to reduce inflammation you should drink homemade turmeric tea. To prepare the tea, boil 4 cups of water with 1 tsp. of ground turmeric. The tea should simmer for 10 minutes. Afterwards strain the tea in a cup. For extra kick add some ginger.

4. Fight against cancer

Curcumin also has anti-cancer properties and many studies have discovered that it is effective when it comes to killing cancer cells and it prevents their growth, especially in bowel, breast, stomach and skin cancer. You can apply one topical ointment that is made from turmeric and treat cancers of the mouth, skin and vulva.

If you want to prepare your own turmeric ointment, just mix turmeric powder and vaseline and rub it on the cancer 3 times every day. Patients who had ulcerated cancers that itched and smelled were very surprised to discover the turmeric ointment is able to reduce the smell and itch.

5. Reduce the pain of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease and it is characterized by patches of itchy, red and scaly skin. Sometimes it can be irritating and painful and because there are no known cures this can cause anxiety and stress among patients.

However there is hope. One study that was published in the Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences, and Applications, discovered that after 4 months of applying a gel that was made from curcumin, while avoiding dairy products and allergens, as well as continuous use of topical antibiotics and steroids, almost three-quarters of the patients had no symptoms anymore.

In order use turmeric topically, you should prepare a thick paste. You just have to simmer 1 part of turmeric and 2 parts water in a small saucepan.

6. Treat Eczema

What’s more, the anti-cancer properties of turmeric are amazing for combatting cancer growth – according to one study that was published in the International Journal of Oncology. In order to prepare the turmeric mouthwash, you just have to combine warm water and turmeric.

Combine 100 ml of water with 10 mg of turmeric extract and add peppermint oil for flavor. You can also make toothpaste by combining ½ tsp. of salt, 1 tsp. of turmeric and 1/2 tsp. of mustard oil.

8. Decrease signs of aging

Turmeric is amazing for skin polishing. If you want to combat the signs of aging you have to use this recipe as a part of your routine.

Combine ¼ tsp. of turmeric, 2 tsp. of milk and 1 tbsp. of gram or chickpea flour. The chickpea flour will stop the turmeric from staining your skin and it will remove the dead skin. The milk will firm the skin and slow wrinkles formation.

Apply the mixture on your skin and gently rub it on the face. Leave it for 10 minutes. Afterwards gently and slowly wipe the mask off with the fingertips and rinse it off with lukewarm water. Another great combination is jojoba oil, turmeric, gram flour, milk and lemon juice. This paste is wonderful skin brightener which hides age spots and reduces s wrinkles.
